CHAPIN—Funeral services for Callie Franklin Maddox, Jr., 79, will be held at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014.Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.The family will greet friends from 11:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at the church. Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 will be assisting the family. Dr. Maddox passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 3.Born on November 11, 1935 in Columbia, he was the son of the late Callie Franklin and Vivienne Bodie Maddox.Following a move to Laurens with his family, Cal met fellow seventh grader, Frances Steadman, which began a lifelong romance that resulted in a 57 year marriage. Cal received his B.A. from Clemson University in English.Immediately upon graduation, Cal and Frances were married in Laurens.They have two children: Sonja Maddox Hollis (Michael A. Hollis) and Callie Franklin Maddox III (Cal) (Trudy Brigman Maddox).They have three grandchildren: Michael Anthony Hollis, Jr., Gracyn Frances Hollis, and Vivian Mackenzie Maddox.Cal is also survived by two sisters Vivienne Dawn Maddox and Robin Maddox Emling (Robert Charles Emling). Cal began a career teaching English, receiving both an M.A. and PhD. from USC. He held positions at Coastal Carolina University (where he named the athletic mascot “Chanticleers” and where students voted to name their live mascot “Maddox”); Newberry College; and Airport High School. At Airport, he coached the golf team and officiated other sports.Cal retired from Irmo High School as chairman of the English department in 1994. Next to his family, his students and Clemson, Cal claimed golf as his abiding interest. He enjoyed years of friendships and friendly competitions with his cronies at Mid Carolina Club.He also became an honorary and much favored member of the women’s golf group “Cal’s Gals”.
