COLUMBIA--Harry “Pete” Dunagan, 90, of Columbia, SC died September 17, 2014 at the Tucker Center in Columbia, SC. Mr. Dunagan was born to George and Wilda Dunagan January 28, 1924 in Florence, AL.As a member of what is now known as America’s “Greatest Generation”, he joined the Navy after high school graduation and served 4 years on a destroyer in the North Atlantic, South Pacific and the waters off Africa.He then attended Auburn University and the University of Tennessee where he earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work.Mr. Dunagan retired at the age of 66 from the S.C. Dept. of Youth Services after working 40 years with children.He was then employed by the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission as a Case Manager until age 79.In 1998, Mr. Dunagan was honored in Washington, DC as South Carolina’s Outstanding Older Worker. Active his entire life, Mr. Dunagan’s hobbies and interests included archery, photography, fitness, genealogy, reading, leather tooling, Senior Olympics, and riding his 1974 BMW motorcycle cross country meeting up with friends and relatives while camping along the way. Mr. Dunagan is survived by his sister, Evelyn Sherrod, of Muscle Shoals, AL and her family; his three children, Lue Dunagan of Atlanta, GA, Steve Dunagan of Concord, NC, and Cindy Cranshaw of Lexington, SC and their spouses and children.He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ermagene Glover Dunagan. There will be a private memorial service for the family at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212.
