James L. Caldwell

COLUMBIA—Dr. James L. “Doc” Caldwell, 82, was called to his heavenly home on August 26, 2017 in the company of his wife of 57 years, his children and grandchildren.His devotion to his wife, family and his all encompassing belief in God marked his entire life. James was born in Birmingham, Alabamato Julius Clifton and Ruby Pauline Caldwell. He had two sisters, Julia Gayle and Paula Rhea. He attended Howard College where he received a BME from there he entered the Army and served with distinction on a rifle team and as a “computer”for a Howitzer unit. He returned to Birmingham where he fell in love with Charlotte Anne McKinney and they were married August 20, 1960. From there they moved and started attending New Orleans Baptist Seminary and he received his Masters in Music.While in New Orleans they were blessed with James Clifton and Kim Allison. He completed his education at Florida State University with a PhD in Music.He was then called to chair the Music Department of Columbia College and to serve as the first Minister of Music at Riverland Hills Baptist Church. Shortly after moving to Columbia, South Carolina they were again blessed with a son, David Thomas. James’ commitment and vision were richly used and blessed by God in both the Music Department at Columbia College and the Music Ministry at RHBC. James is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his sons, Clif and David; his daughter, Kim; his grandchildren, Sydney (Josh) Detwiller, Sally (Destin) Nichols, Harrison (Maggie) Caldwell and Hudson Caldwell, Eli Powell and Lauren, Ellison, and Shawn Caldwell. He is preceded in death by his father, Julius Clifton, mother, Ruby Pauline, sister, Judy Gail and Paula Rhea. Services will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Blvd, Irmo, SC 29063 at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 11:30 AM. Temples Halloran Funeral Home will be assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Music Ministry of RHBC/Music Missions,201 Lake Murray Blvd, Irmo, SC 29063.
