Jesse Stephen “Steve” Shaffer was born on August 23, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Madge Loreane (Smith) Shaffer and Jesse Webster Shaffer. He graduated from Williston-Elko High School in 1961, where he distinguished himself as a two-sport athlete and a strong academic performer. It was also there that he met the love of his life, his wife of more than 60 years.
Steve continued his education at the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1965 through a Naval scholarship. Following two tours of duty in Vietnam, he returned to academia and completed his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics in 1975.
Upon earning his doctorate, Steve enjoyed a distinguished and accomplished professional career. He worked in various capacities for General Electric, Mepco Electra, N.V. Philips (Netherlands), Philips Components (USA), BC Components, and ultimately his own consulting firm. Over the course of his career, he authored numerous publications, secured patents, and received countless commendations and awards, far too many to cite in this limited capacity.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Steve proudly served his country for more than 27 years in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Captain (O-6). His military service was marked by leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication.
Steve was deeply committed to serving his community and giving back. He was actively involved in many charitable and professional organizations, including the University of South Carolina Naval ROTC Alumni Association, Rotary Club of St. Andrews, the American Physical Society, the Explorers Club, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Habitat for Humanity, and the Salvation Army, among others.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Faye (Carroll) Shaffer; his sons, Stephen Scott Shaffer and Curtis Brandt Shaffer; his daughters-in-law, Misty Ellis Shaffer and Janine (“Jeannie”) Marie Shaffer; and his cherished grandchildren, Austin, Cameron, Parker, Sydnie, Weston, and Sadie.
Steve was respected by all who called him colleague and treasured by all who knew him personally. His leadership was unmatched, his kindness genuine, and his jovial spirit made him easy to love. Without sounding cliché, he truly was a blessing to this world, and his absence will be deeply felt.
In lieu of flowers, Steve’s wishes were for donations to any charity meaningful to you. Among the many causes he supported, two that remained especially close to his heart were the Semper Fi Fund and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Godspeed, Steve, Mission accomplished.
