Johnny Lanier Starnes, 82, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025. Born on January 2, 1943, in Wagener, South Carolina, Johnny lived a life of purpose, love, and faith.
A veteran of the Air National Guard, Johnny devoted more than 35 years of his career to Wilbur Smith and Associates, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment as a financial analyst. He was also a faithful servant of his community and his church, serving as a deacon at Riverland Hills Baptist Church. Above all, Johnny was a man of deep Christian faith who found joy in helping others and living out his calling to serve.
Johnny was a devoted husband to Betty Jane Starnes for 58 wonderful years. Together, they raised three sons: Bryan, Kevin, and Jason. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren:
Kathryn (Bryson) ,Abigail (Lucas), Olivia Grace (Foster,) Haley, Kendall, Jackson, Savannah and a proud great-grandfather of Sullie J. and Hallie Anne.
Johnny was one of nine siblings and is survived by three loving sisters: Betty (Jerry) B’Rells of Lexington, Pat (Billy) Wells of Greenville, and Judy (Doug) Fabel of Winnsboro.
Johnny will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his deep love for family, and his servant’s heart. He found his greatest joy in serving those he loved most, and his family was his proudest accomplishment.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home with burial with Military Honors to follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens in Columbia, South Carolina. Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of a man whose legacy of love, humility, and strength will live on in all who knew him one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
