Norma Jean Szymczyk

COLUMBIA—Norma Jean Szymczyk peacefully joined her husband of 63 years, Bob Szymczyk, in the early morning of September 7th, 2017. She led a busy andhappy life as a military wife and mother of five children. She is survived by her five children, Mary Ann LaRusso (Steven), Stanley Szymczyk (Leslie), Treasa Thompson (Larry), Stephen Szymczyk (Sallie), Kenneth Szymczyk (Silvia), nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2017 in the Temples-Halloran Funeral Home Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 with visitation at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229. Norma was born in Isabella, Missouri. She met her late husband in Saint Louis Missouri while he was stationed there in the Army and she was attending business college. They married and began their life together, raising their children in different locations because of the military and finally settling down in Columbia, SC.She worked as a purchasing agent for both the Fort Jackson Exchange and the Midlands Center of SC.When she and her husband retired they moved permanently up to Lake Murray.She and Bob enjoyed spending time at their lake house with friends and family. While her kids moved on and began their lives, anchored by the love she provided, Norma never stopped providing a peaceful haven for family and friends to visit. Norma prided herself on her cooking and never had a shortage of pies or sweets waiting for her family and other visitors. In retirement she enjoyed life at their lake house, growing beautiful gardens full of flowers and cultivating wonderful memories for her family. She will be deeply missed.
