Susan Jones

August 22, 1946 — January 5, 2026

Columbia

Susan Ashley Bodie Jones passed away unexpectedly on the fifth of January at her home. Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank Watts Ashley and Alice Wilson Ashley. Susan was the widow of the late Rep Elden Jones.

She was a homemaker and worked in real estate, primarily in apartment management for 32 years. She enjoyed fast cars such as TransAms and Mustangs and dancing to her favorite R & B songs at concerts. Susan attended Newberry schools and Newberry College, where her father was a professor. Susan was always proud of the fact that her eighth great-grandfather was Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper (Lord Ashley) who founded Charleston for King Charles. After the family moved to Columbia, Susan became very involved at Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. One of Susan's greatest pleasures was sending greeting cards to the infirmed, as well as sending cards for birthdays and holidays, making candy, and letting the congregation know that the church was always there for them. But more importantly, she loved her family and her cats affectionately.

She was predeceased by her former husband, Robert Bodie, and her only sibling, Dr. Franklin Ashley. Susan is survived by her daughter, Melanie Kicklighter; and her grandson, Chandler Kicklighter; cousins, Sarah Virginia Muirheid, Charlie Wilson, and Rachel Kilpatrick. She's also survived by her sister-in-law, Dottie Ashley, and her very special friends, Jean Lefler and Marie Brigman.

Services will be held 2pm Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Broad River Road in Columbia, SC with refreshments following the service in the gathering room. A private burial will be held at a later date.
