Cobb Strickland. She passed away on August 31, 2021. Linda grew up in Lake City, SC, and graduated from J. Paul Truluck High School with the Class of 1969. Shortly after she began her long career with Southern Bell. Beginning as a cord board telephone operator in Florence, SC, she later retired from the Workforce Maintenance Center with BellSouth after 35 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she enjoyed working in the menswear department at Belk. Throughout, her coworkers naturally became many of her best friends. Linda moved with her family to Columbia, SC in the late 1970s and made her home there. She was a long-devoted member of St. Andrews Baptist Church, where she was a member of Al Walker and Tom Sheets’ Sunday school class. Linda regularly volunteered her time to others and was a leader in Mission Friends, where on Wednesday evenings she shared the joy of teaching preschoolers about the work of missionaries around the world, combined with a healthy dose of finger painting. Linda modeled her Christian faith and lived life in a way that impressed and impacted those fortunate enough to know and love her. Surviving are her sons, Sheldon C. Kirby (Michelle), a Digital Technician with AT&T in Raleigh, NC, and Thomas C. Kirby, an Associate Attorney with the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson LLP in Washington, DC. She is also survived by her sister, Marty Sigler; grandchildren, Ashlyn Kirby, Grayson Kirby, and Makayla Kirby; nieces, Nancy Gause, Nina Altman, Diane Pardue; nephew, John Sigler; and a host of other nieces and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by her Dad and Mom, sisters, Lucille Herring, Jemima Miles, and Pearline Bethune. Memorials may be made to Lizzy Hafter Memorial Fund, c/o UVa Fund, PO Box 400314, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4314.
